2021 Thanksgiving/Christmas Tournament

1977 Los Angeles Rams 7 – 1981 San Diego Chargers 0

The Los Angeles Rams defeat the San Diego Chargers by a score of 7-0. This was a defensive battle, and the Rams won on their final possession.

Chargers had 1st possession.

On 3rd down, Fouts has Eric Sievers wide open in the middle of the field. The pass missed him, and the Chargers had to punt.

The Rams, led by Joe Willie Namath takes over at their 31.

Quick pass to Ron Jesse against soft coverage.

It picked up 5 yards, and the Chargers’ young coach (grandson) is setting his defense.

Jesse had another chance to extend the drive, but Namath missed him to end the half.

Chargers take their 2nd possession. Grandson has them in a unique formation.

Wes Chandler comes WIDE open in the middle of the field (broken coverage).

The pass was completed and Chandler is off to the races.

Unfortunately for my grandson, Chandler heads out of bounds at the 8.

Grandson gets aggressive on the stick passing from the 8 yard line. He was trusting Charlie Joiner to beat Bill Simpson to the spot. Sadly (for my grandson), Joiner whiffed and Simpson got to it before Joiner’s base passed the marker. INTERCEPTION AT THE 1.

The defensive coordinator was nervous with Ron Jesse open to the left side of the field. He was happy when it was incomplete.

Namath has Lawrence McCutcheon streaking open down the middle of the field. Grandson sets up the passing stick.

Namath connects with McCutcheon.

McCutcheon runs the Rams into the next round. Final score, Rams 7 – Chargers 0.
